The Hunters and Trappers Committee of Aklavik receives annual funding from the local government of the NWT to assist local harvesters that undertake on the land activities.
The HTC also look for other sources of funding to do on the land programming.
We take direction from the membership on an annual basis to set objectives for the programming.
Through our funding from the Government of the NWT under CHAP (Community Harvesters Assistance Program), active harvesters usually apply for the funding to support on the land activities to harvest traditional foods and in return , harvesters country food to the HTC which in turn helps support local Elders/Single Parents who might not have the means of getting out on the land. The HTC also use CHAP funding to do community hunts.
The HTC does not getting enough funding and it is hard to find other funding sources, not enough insurance options, not enough resources to fully maintain the project.
Community members get traditional foods, youth who take part in project benefit from traditional knowledge,
When our local membership go on the land to harvest they need traditional knowledge to know where they go, where to harvest and the time of year to harvest.
We also have a lot of traditional knowledge sharing on the HTC board, most directors on the HTC board are local harvesters.
