The National Inuit Youth Council (NIYC) has elected Gwen Natsiq of Iqaluit as its new president for the 2025-2027 term.
The National Inuit Youth Council represents Inuit youth across Canada. The President is the spokesperson for NIYC at both the national and international levels and is a permanent participant on the Board of Directors of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami and the Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada. The President is also a permanent participant of the Inuit-Crown Partnership Committee (ICPC) as an observer.
Natsiq, 21, is currently working on a teaching degree at Nunavut Arctic College in Iqaluit, where she has served as student council president. Natsiq has also worked as a mental health outreach worker and served as a wellness advocate for Inuit youth at a national level.
“I feel so honoured and excited to lead this council,” said Natsiq. “I will work diligently to represent the voices of our youth, foster meaningful engagement, and help drive positive change in our youth.”
Four candidates ran for NIYC president, in addition to Natsiq: Trevor Wright, Davina McLeod and Nia Morris. The NIYC would like to thank the candidates for their interest and leadership.
The NIYC would also like to thank outgoing President Susie-Ann Kudluk for her commitment to the rights and well-being of Inuit youth.
The NIYC president will work closely with the National Inuit Youth Council made up of the designated voting members representing the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, Kitikmeot Inuit Association, Kivalliq Inuit Association, Qikiqtani Inuit Association, Qarjuit Youth Council and Nunatsiavut Government.
