July 30, 2025—Ottawa, ON

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami will host its presidential election on September 18, 2025, following ITK’s Annual General Meeting to be held in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut.

The President of ITK is elected through a democratic process that represents all Inuit. Votes are cast by the designated Member Representatives of Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, Makivvik and the Nunatsiavut Government, in addition to two delegates per region, and the Vice-President of ITK.

Inuit at least 18 years of age may be nominated by the designated Inuit Treaty Organization Member Representative or may submit a Candidate Application Form.

Individuals submitting a Candidate Application Form must provide a cover letter that outlines their experience in a leadership role, knowledge of issues important to Inuit as well as a description of what they would like to achieve as ITK President, and secure the signatures of 20 Inuit aged 18 or older who support the candidacy.

Candidates will be given a 10-minute opportunity to address Members and Delegates during the ITK AGM on September 18.

The deadline for nominations is Thursday, August 28, 2025, at 5 pm ET. The Candidate Application Form as well as other documents are available below.

FrequentlyAskedQuestions

Who is eligible to run for ITK President?

How can a person be nominated?

There are two pathways:

  • Member Nomination – A designated Member Representative of one of the four Treaty Organizations may nominate one (1) Inuk in writing.
  • Individual (Self‑Declared) Nomination – Any eligible Inuk may submit a Candidate Application Form supported by 20 signatures of enrolled Inuit over the age of 18.

What documents must accompany a nomination?

  • Cover letter outlining skills/experience
  • Current Level1 Criminal Record Check for each province/territory lived in during the past fiveyears
  • Passport quality digital photo
  • $500 deposit (e transfer, cheque, money order, or credit card)

Do I need 20 signatures if I’m nominated by a Member Representative?

No.

The 20‑signature requirement applies only to Individual (self‑declared) candidates. Member‑nominated candidates do not need additional signatures.

What happens after I submit my nomination?

The CRO will:

  1. Acknowledge receipt within 24 hours.
  2. Verify eligibility, documents, and (if applicable) each of the 20 signatures.
  3. Publish the certified candidate list (or an acclamation notice) within a week of the deadline.

Who votes in the election?

ITK’s by‑laws designate the four Inuit Treaty Organizations as its voting members. The President is elected by their duly appointed representatives, ensuring the outcome reflects the democratically mandated will of Inuit as expressed through each region’s own treaty‑organization governance processes.

Votes are cast by:

  • The four Treaty‑Organization Member Representatives;
  • Two additional delegates per region (appointed by each Treaty Organization); and
  • The Vice‑President of ITK (held by the President of Inuit Circumpolar Council – Canada).

Is there an election speech?

Yes.

Each certified candidate is allotted 10 minutes to address Members and Delegates during the ITK AGM in Cambridge Bay on 18 September 2025.

What if only one candidate is certified?

If, after verification, only one candidate remains, the CRO will declare that person elected by acclamation on voting day. No ballot will be held.

In what language can I submit my documents?

Forms and supporting documents may be submitted in English or Inuktut. Candidates may deliver their AGM speech in the language of their choice; interpretation will be provided.
