Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami’s Board of Directors welcomed the appointment of a new Federal Cabinet during their meeting in Ottawa on May 14, and pledged to work collaboratively with federal counterparts to ensure continuity of the Inuit-Crown Partnership Committee’s priority areas.

Board members also expressed grave concerns regarding barriers to voting in Inuit Nunangat during the April 28 federal election. They directed ITK to work with Elections Canada to ensure accessible voting across Inuit Nunangat for future elections.

The Board approved a new impact assessment on housing investment. The report looks at the impact of federal housing investments in Inuit Nunangat to identify spending gaps.

They also endorsed a forthcoming position paper on Inuit sovereignty, security and defence priorities that calls for increased investment in Inuit Nunangat, bringing Inuit Nunangat into Canada, and securing the region through the Inuit-Crown Partnership Committee.

And they approved a funding allocation of $10 million for a new phase of the Inuit Research Network, money that will be distributed over the next five years to advance self-determination in Inuit research and build research capacity.
