Ottawa announces $229M to support children and families across Inuit Nunangat

Indigenous Services Minister Mandy Gull-Masty announced a suite of new funds for families across Inuit Nunangat on Feb. 19, including:

  • $115 million to renew funding for the Inuit Child First Initiative
  • $27 million over five years will be focused on supporting Inuit-led, community-specific approaches to eliminate tuberculosis (TB) across Inuit Nunangat
  • $30 million to meet the current needs of the Nutrition North Canada subsidy
  • $50 million through Budget 2025’s Build Communities Strong Fund to support the development of the first Inuit-led university in Canada, Inuit Nunangat University

Ottawa’s new investments in supporting Inuit children and families has eased some concerns about the future of those programs, but some northerners say they want to see more than just funding for stop-gap measures
