OTTAWA, ON – Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami congratulates Members of Parliament elected this week, including three first-time representatives for Inuit Nunangat ridings: Rebecca Alty in the Northwest Territories, Mandy Gull-Masty in Abitibi-Baie-James-Nunavik-Eeyou and Philip Earle in Labrador. We also welcome back incumbent Nunavut MP Lori Idlout.
We look forward to working with all new and returning MPs and building strong, respectful partnerships in the months and years ahead. We also congratulate current and former members of Cabinet reelected this week, many of whom were closely involved in the work of the Inuit Crown Partnership Committee.
It is deeply concerning that many Inuit did not have the opportunity to vote in this election, either because of the early closing of polling stations, lack of any polling stations or issues with the availability of ballots. We are pleased that Elections Canada has committed to reviewing the issues that prevented many Inuit from voting and demand that those issues be addressed so that they do not happen again.
The April 28 federal election brought in a minority Liberal government. As with the previous minority government, we know this presents challenges, especially when it comes to building consensus for new policies, programs and legislation. Consensus-building is the cornerstone of Inuit governance, and we encourage all parties to work diligently and respectfully to implement solutions to the pressing issues facing Inuit Nunangat and Canada.
We have arrived at a pivotal moment in Canadian history that requires courage, humility, and commitment to building a strong, sovereign nation for all. Inuit are critical to the work of nation-building in Canada. We look forward to continuing this journey with Prime Minister Mark Carney and his government.
