Frequently Asked Questions

What is Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK)?
ITK is the national Inuit organization representing and promoting the interests of 70,000 Inuit in Canada.

I am requesting an interview with the president of ITK, how can I contact them?
Please send an email outlining the nature of your request, as well as the name of the publication and your deadline, to [email protected]

Can I make a request to have ITKs president speak at our event?
Please send an email to [email protected] explaining the event and its connection to Inuit.

How do I find general information about Inuit and Inuit Nunangat?
Please see the Who We Are and About Inuit sections of our website.

I am a filmmaker looking to partner with ITK.
ITK works to advance national Inuit priorities and initiatives through representation, advocacy, research, and partnership in federal program, policy, and legislative development. Inuit-led and Inuit-centred work is at the heart of ITK.

ITK, Land Claim Organizations (LCOs) and communities in Inuit Nunangat may be seeking more strategic partnerships that start at the beginning of a project. Consider working with the guidance and input of Inuit at the idea stage.

ITK’s National Inuit Strategy on Research (NISR) offers some guidance on early and informed engagement.

I am a researcher looking for guidance on conducting research in Inuit communities.
Our National Inuit Strategy on Research (NISR) is the place to start. Inuit in Canada are among the most studied Indigenous peoples on earth. ITK encourages researchers to read and follow guidelines outlined in the NISR.

I’m concerned about cultural appropriation. How do I ensure my project respectfully incorporates Inuit?
ITK receives a number of requests for advice regarding usage by non-Inuit of Inuit culture or symbols. It is outside of ITK’s mandate to provide input on all such projects, but we do recommend that anyone who has concerns consider the following questions:

  • Is the work is being done by Inuit?
  • Are Inuit included in decision-making?
  • Does the work benefit Inuit?
  • Is there a significant reason to incorporate Inuit culture in the work that would override any of these considerations?

If the answers to these questions are not an immediate and clear yes, then you may want to reconsider how or why you are incorporating Inuit culture in your work.
