Indigenous leaders met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to strategize over trade threats from US President Donald Trump.

The discussion was held at the prime minister’s office before his meeting with premiers on the same topic. Indigenous leaders told Trudeau they should not be meeting separately and instead, should be consulted alongside first ministers.

“We know what it’s like to lose control over our homeland, and we will do everything we can to guard against that now,” said ITK President Natan Obed, who is also vice-president of the Inuit Circumpolar Council, which represents Inuit in Canada, Russia, Alaska and Greenland. “We are a necessary part of the Canadian response.”
